THE DOLLARS AND SENSE OF AN
EDUCATION "Thank you
for coming to my school. You
made me realize that I should use my
money wisely and I should continue
toward my goal. Thank you very
much for making a difference in my
life." - Fox Chapel Middle
School Student.
Eighth
graders are usually thirteen years
old. Some are older.
Some enjoy their educational
experiences, but too many are
already thinking about when they can
legally leave school.
Eighth grade has been identified in
recent research as a pivotal year
for understanding the importance of
staying in school, and Junior
Achievement of West Central Florida
has done something about it through
their Diploma-see Program.
Recently funded with a $5,000 grant
by the Community Foundation of
Hernando County, Diploma-see is
heavily staffed with volunteer
mentors from across the business and
civic community. The mentors
spend four hours in the classroom
delivering the Economics for Success
curriculum interspersed with real
life examples and personal stories.
The lesson emphasizes the economic
value of earning their high school
diploma.
"It's very important for these young
people to understand the outcomes of
their choices. This program is
a great way to inspire students to
get the diploma," said Bob Barnett,
Community Foundation councilman.
