AN EDUCATED WOMAN AHEAD OF
HER TIME A
donor of the Community Foundation of
Greater Sun City Center since 1999,
Dorothy
Ronken has lived life to its
fullest. Having celebrated her
100th birthday on July 6, 2009, Mrs.
Ronken recently reflected on her
life. She completed four years
of college at Northwestern
University in 1928 at the age of 19,
and then obtained a masters degree
at Wisconsin University. She
subsequently began a fulfilling 35
year career with the Chicago Board
of Education, beginning as a
substitute teacher and retiring as
Director of Standardized Testing.
Mrs.
Ronken and her husband traveled the
world and had one son, two
grandchildren, and
two great grandchildren. Upon
the death of her first husband, she
married again at age 75 and
introduced her Oscar to her love of
travel. Together they
established the Oscar Ronken Fund
within the Community Foundation.
Through one fund, Mrs. Ronken
continues her interest in education
by providing scholarship assistance
to high school students in south
Hillsborough County. Her
second fund provides support to
Moffitt Cancer Center for medical
research. Reflecting on her
relationship with the Community
Foundation, she said she most
appreciates the fact that these
funds will continue to support her
causes in perpetuity.
