WELCOME TO THE ECONOMICS OF SHARING
An
Ad Hoc Committee was formed
this past year under the
leadership andencouragement of
Council Chair Vicki Fox.
Its mission: to bring
nonprofit organizations
together for shared benefit
as a way to address some of
their needs in a shrinking
economy. "A creative
problem-solving approach was
needed when dollars could
not be part of the
solution," said Fox.
In
the words of one organizer,
there was a 'seismic' shift
in the nonprofit community
when these organizations
came together to swap
surplus goods and services
at the first annual St.
Petersburg SWAP Meet.
Tents, room dividers, and
modes of transportation, for
example, have been or will
soon be shared.
Dr. Peter Betzer, president
of the St. Petersburg
Downtown Partnership and a
founding council member of
the Community Foundation of
Greater St. Petersburg,
incubated the idea and
helped make it a reality.
"This SWAP Meet not only
presented a new way to
address financial challenges
but presented a new mode of
operation for nonprofits - a
highly cooperative mode,"
says Betzer.
More than 100 individuals
representing approximately
60 nonprofits participated
in this first-of-its-kind
gathering.
The Arts Center of St.
Petersburg served as the
welcoming venue for the most
recent informational evening
sponsored by the Community
Foundation of Greater St.
Petersburg. Several
residents of the area came
to hear the message of
flexibility, integrity, and
accountability that are
intrinsic traits of the work
done by the Foundation.
Terry Brett, Board Chair of
the Arts Center, spoke of
the relationship the Arts
Center has had over the
years with the Foundation,
including being the
recipient of our community
grant making that allowed
for scholarships for
underprivileged youth to
attend summer classes.
Several
council members joined our
guests including Council
Chair, Mary Anne Reilly, who
spoke of the benefits of
working with the Foundation
from the standpoint of both
a donor and a professional
advisor.
Guests were invited to
view the Jun Kaneko
exhibition at the Art
Center.
Playbills
The following ads have recently appeared in playbills for The Florida Orchestra and American Stage Theatre respectively. The Foundation is proud to administer the endowment funds for these organizations.
