The First Tee

The First Tee, a division of the World Golf Federation, has as its mission, to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that provide character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The First Tee of St. Petersburg was established in April, 2005.

More than 700 children participate in the First Tee of St. Petersburg annually. Some of the programs offered include: Special Olympics, Academy Prep, summer camps and clinics, middle school golf, a tournament program, National Youth Sports program (NYSP) through Eckerd College and the Police Department, Police Athletic League (PAL), outreach programs to local schools and youth groups and junior leagues.

The First Tee teaches golf, but more importantly, it teaches character development and a life skills curriculum. Each child that participates in one of the programs goes through the life skills curriculum, regardless of their age, gender, race or socio-economic status.

The First Tee has nine core values that are seamlessly woven into the curriculum. Those core values are: responsibility, sportsmanship, perseverance, confidence, judgment, honesty, respect, courtesy, and integrity.

More than 300 children in the program come from low income families. Without support from the community through donations and grants, these same children would not have the opportunity to participate in such a valuable program.

Family Resources' Youth Arts Corps Cultural Internship Program

Family Resources' Youth Arts Corps is an arts education, youth development, and job training program that operates three after-school programs and a community-based artist-in-residence program serving youth ages 8 - 17. All Corps programming is free to participants, and skills in the visual, literary, performing and digital arts are taught by professional artists.

With funding from the Community Foundation, the Youth Arts Corps provided a unique opportunity for ten at-risk young people to work as cultural interns at local arts organizations. Partnerships were formed with American Stage, the Dali Museum and Creative Clay Cultural Arts Center. Ten interns were selected, interviewed, and then placed at different organizations to be trained in various job and life skills.

With funding from the Foundation, the Youth Arts Corps also provided reliable transportation to and from their intern site to ease this ongoing challenge for young people in St. Petersburg.

Due to the successful outcome of this pilot project, the Youth Arts Corps will seek on-going funding to make this a permanent part of their programming and expand it to serve youth throughout the county.
