For many donors, a scholarship fund is more than a financial commitment—it’s a reflection of deeply held values. It represents a belief in education, opportunity, and the potential of future generations.
It’s only natural, then, to begin thinking about how those values can continue over time.
If your children or other family members are expected to become involved in your scholarship fund in the future, now can be a wonderful time to start the conversation. The purpose would not be a formal handoff, of course, but an opportunity to share your story and invite them into the purpose behind your giving.
Often, the most meaningful place to start is with “why.” You can share your “why” with children of all ages. Why did you establish your scholarship fund? Was there a personal experience that shaped your decision? A teacher, mentor, or moment that made education possible for you or someone you love? Sharing these stories can help the next generation understand that your fund is not just about dollars—it’s about impact.
From there, conversations can naturally expand.

At the same time, many donors find it helpful to introduce their children to the broader educational landscape in the community as they get older. Today’s students are pursuing a wide range of paths, from four-year degrees to technical certifications and apprenticeships. Workforce needs are shifting, and in many communities, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals in areas such as healthcare, technology, and the trades. Understanding these trends can help future generations make thoughtful decisions that keep your scholarship fund relevant and impactful.
