The Mary Petro Food and Medicine Fund

Mary Petro was one of those people you sometimes hear about. She lived quietly and frugally in Sun City Center.

Now her name is well-known among residents of Sun City Center who have difficulty affording proper food and medicine. When she died in 2009 at 96, Mary Petro left her significant estate to the Community Foundation Tampa Bay to help her neighbors.

The Mary Petro Food and Medicine Fund generates more than $100,000 a year that is distributed to those in need who live in Sun City Center or the Kings Point retirement community. The program is administered for the Community Foundation Tampa Bay by the Sun City Center United Methodist Church.

When the Community Foundation’s South Shore Council commissioned a community needs assessment in 2016, one of the concerns that emerged was the nutritional health of the area residents and food insecurity.
