Community Foundation Tampa Bay joins the Tampa Bay community in mourning the passing of David J. Fischer, who died on October 22, 2025, at the age of 92.
Best known as a visionary civic leader and three-term mayor of St. Petersburg, David also played a pivotal role in shaping the growth and resilience of our Foundation and community. As President and CEO of Community Foundation Tampa Bay from 2004 to 2011, he guided the organization through some of the most pivotal years in its history, including the Great Recession, with steadiness, compassion, and vision.
During that time, David ensured the Foundation remained a trusted source of strength for our fundholders and the nonprofits they support. His thoughtful leadership helped preserve the region’s philanthropic spirit, even amid economic uncertainty. Under his guidance, the Foundation deepened its partnerships and reaffirmed its role as a catalyst for community well-being.
David’s influence extended well beyond his professional roles. He was instrumental in bringing together community members to launch Ready for Life, a nonprofit organization that continues to help young adults in Pinellas and Pasco Counties build successful, independent lives. His lifelong commitment to service reflected a belief that collaboration and generosity are the foundation of a thriving community.
David Fischer’s legacy is one of quiet strength, generosity, and enduring care for our community. His leadership helped build the foundation, both figuratively and literally, for the thriving and connected Tampa Bay we know today.
