Family, Values, and Lasting Impact: The Douglas Family Legacy

For the Douglas family, philanthropy began with a thoughtful decision to be strategic and intentional.

In 2003, Patricia Douglas received proceeds from the sale of her law practice and her ownership interest in the building that housed the firm. She and her husband, Brad, found themselves in a fortunate position.

“Just like we were saving for our children's education and our retirement, we knew we wanted to save for charitable giving, but we weren’t sure what to do,” Patricia shared.

As Patricia and Brad embarked on their charitable journey, their CPA introduced them to Community Foundation Tampa Bay, knowing the Foundation could provide the expertise and tools they needed. By year-end, Patricia and Brad established a donor-advised fund, allowing them to receive immediate tax benefits while giving themselves time to thoughtfully determine how their philanthropy could make the greatest impact.

As they became more familiar with the Foundation’s work, the Douglas family saw the value of having a trusted partner with deep knowledge of the Tampa Bay community. What began as a practical solution evolved into a long-term relationship grounded in shared purpose. Patricia later joined the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and continues to serve in leadership roles.

In 2013, the family took the next step in their philanthropic journey. Patricia and Brad became one of the first families to establish a Family Foundation (a Donor Advised Fund with additional services and benefits) within Community Foundation Tampa Bay. The decision was intentional. They wanted their children, Maren, Jack, and Anders, to be actively involved in shaping the family’s charitable legacy.

With support from Community Foundation staff, the Douglas family began having meaningful conversations about generosity and responsibility. The team also helped them explore their shared values and the areas of impact they hoped to influence, identifying where those priorities aligned to guide their strategic grantmaking. Over time, these discussions deepened, creating opportunities to listen to their children’s perspectives, explore emerging community needs, and reflect on how their charitable giving could evolve.

“It’s been an eye- and brain-opener and redirected a lot of our giving,” Patricia said.

Today, philanthropy is truly a family affair for the Douglases. Their legacy is not defined only by the funds they established, but by the values they are passing to the next generation.

Their story is a reminder that charitable planning can begin with a simple question: How do we want to make a difference? With thoughtful structure and trusted guidance, that question can grow into a legacy that brings a family together and strengthens a community for years to come.
