At Community Foundation Tampa Bay, we believe the arts have the power to bring people together, build confidence, and create a sense of belonging. Through a 2025 competitive grant, we were proud to support New Tampa Players in expanding access to theater for individuals of all abilities.
With a $20,000 grant, funding helped provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and strengthen inclusive programming through the Penguin Project, a theater initiative designed for children and young adults with special needs.
Housed within New Tampa Players, the Penguin Project brings together artists with special needs, ages 18 to 47, from across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties to take the stage in an annual junior-length musical. At the heart of the program are peer mentors, who are paired one-on-one with each participant. These mentors support artists throughout the entire production process, from learning lines and choreography to building confidence and friendships that often last well beyond the final curtain. One year after receiving funding, the impact is already visible.
In their recent production of The Little Mermaid, the stage came alive not only with music and storytelling, but with moments of connection, growth, and joy. With the support of ASL interpreters and inclusive programming, more individuals were able to fully participate in and experience the performance, both on stage and in the audience.
“Everyone should experience a standing ovation at least once in their lives! Through the Community Foundation’s support, New Tampa Players was able to give our Little Mermaid casts 4 standing ovations! There is nothing that will build more confidence than a job well done and an audience at their feet clapping! Thank you to the Community Foundation for making this possible.”
— Nora Paine, Producing Artistic Director at New Tampa Players
For participants, the experience extends far beyond theater. It is an opportunity to develop new skills, form meaningful relationships, and express themselves in a supportive and empowering environment. For families and the broader community, it is a reminder of what is possible when barriers are removed and everyone is welcomed.
The success of the Penguin Project reflects the power of thoughtful investment in community-driven programs. By supporting inclusive arts initiatives, we are helping ensure that creativity, confidence, and connection are accessible to all.
“This work highlights our commitment to supporting programs that expand access and create opportunities for individuals of all abilities to engage in creative and meaningful ways.”
