When hurricanes strike, the physical toll is obvious—damaged homes, disrupted lives, and communities left to rebuild. However, what often remains unseen is the mental health impact of such disasters. For individuals and families who have lived through these traumatic events, the aftermath can bring feelings of grief, anxiety, and stress that can linger long after the storm has passed. Without adequate mental health resources, those struggling may find it difficult to cope and rebuild their lives. For these reasons, mental health support following a disaster is essential to healing and resilience.
How Community Foundation Tampa Bay is Strengthening Mental Health Resources
To help support those struggling with mental health needs following Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, Community Foundation Tampa Bay has issued grants to several key mental health organizations serving our region: Live Tampa Bay, NAMI Pinellas, NAMI Pasco, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Frameworks of Tampa Bay, and Tampa Bay Thrives. Each of these nonprofits provides unique and valuable services, from crisis intervention to ongoing mental health care, ensuring that community members have access to the help they need.
- Live Tampa Bay offers suicide prevention initiatives, providing tools and resources to help individuals and families navigate mental health challenges, particularly in times of crisis.
- NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) local chapters focus on education and support for individuals living with mental health conditions and their families, offering a safe space and resources for those affected.
- Crisis Center of Tampa Bay provides immediate, 24/7 support for individuals in crisis, delivering services such as counseling, crisis intervention, and referrals to long-term care.
- Tampa Bay Thrives works on enhancing access to mental health services across the community, building partnerships, and developing resources to meet a range of mental health needs.
With our community facing the complex challenges of hurricane recovery, these organizations are essential pillars of support, helping individuals regain a sense of hope and well-being.
The Need for More Philanthropy
To ensure these and other nonprofits can continue their vital work, we invite you to support mental health nonprofits that have expressed urgent needs on our Critical Needs List. Your support helps mental health organizations expand to meet the increasing demand for their services and offer care to our neighbors who need it most. Together, we can support those struggling with the mental health effects of trauma and loss and foster a stronger, more resilient community.
Mental Health Training for Nonprofit Staff and Volunteers
Community Foundation Tampa Bay also partners with St. Petersburg College (SPC) to offer FREE Mental Health First Aid Training for nonprofit employees and volunteers. This training is critical for those on the front lines of service, who often face heavier workloads and new challenges following a disaster. The course equips staff and volunteers with the skills to recognize and respond to mental health and substance use challenges, reduce stigma, and support mental wellness. Participants learn about risk factors, warning signs, and a 5-step action plan for crisis intervention.
By equipping nonprofit staff and volunteers with this training, we aim to better support the individuals they serve in Tampa Bay. To learn more about this opportunity and enroll in Mental Health First Aid Training, please visit:
