Turning a Personal Passion into Lasting Opportunity: The Rosa Rio Music Endowment

For Rosa Rio, music was never just a profession—it was a calling.

As one of the nation’s most accomplished silent film organists, Rosa spent decades behind the keys, bringing stories to life and preserving a unique art form. Even in her later years, visitors to Tampa Theatre could find her filling the historic space with the sound of the organ well into her 100s.

As she reflected on her life and legacy, Rosa recognized that talent alone is not always enough. Opportunity matters. Not every aspiring musician has access to the instruments, instruction, or support needed to grow.

Together with her husband of 62 years, David Yeoman, she set out to change that.

Honoring Rosa's Vision

With guidance from Community Foundation Tampa Bay and their trusted professional advisor, they created a plan to turn their shared passion for music into lasting opportunity. By establishing an endowment through the Community Foundation, they were able to ensure their love of music would continue to open doors for future generations.

Today, their generosity continues to do exactly that.

Grants from the Rosa Rio Music Endowment at Community Foundation Tampa Bay support college music students and help high school students access the instruments they need to learn, practice, and perform. The fund also supports programs like the Gasparilla Music Festival’s Recycled Tunes initiative, placing instruments directly into the hands of students who might otherwise go without. Because of Rosa and David, more young people are discovering what’s possible through strategic, values-based philanthropy.

At Community Foundation Tampa Bay, our team partners with fundholders to identify the values that matter most to them and then bring those priorities to life through a legacy plan designed to honor their vision for generations. As a trusted institution, we’re able to support their giving in perpetuity, giving donors the confidence that we will be here to ensure their legacy lives on.

Rosa Rio’s story is a reminder that legacy isn’t only about what we leave behind—it’s about what we choose to lift up.
