Rising Together: Support for Community Food Bank of Citrus County

After Hurricane Idalia left Community Food Bank of Citrus County with significant damage, the organization’s staff, volunteers and patrons were just returning to normal when Helene and Milton struck. In the wake of the back-to-back storms, the nonprofit was struggling to provide critical resources to residents of Citrus County facing food insecurity.

Barbara Sprague, Executive Director of the food bank, shared the significance of the hurricanes’ impact on her team. “We have board members and volunteers with extensive damage, and our finances are taking a very serious toll, but we will all get through this.”

Distributing Aid Quickly

Community Food Bank of Citrus County was one of the first organizations to receive support from Community Foundation Tampa Bay, after we activated our Critical Needs List. With grant funding from the Community Foundation, the nonprofit has since provided water, MREs (meals ready-to-eat), cleaning kits, and perishable food items to local residents struggling after the storms.

“It is truly comforting to know how much others care,” said Sprague, after receiving the news of the grant. “We are honored to serve alongside Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, our pantry partners, and our wonderful community as we work to assist our residents in hurricane recovery. Meals, groceries, cleaning supplies, and connections continue to flow through our hub and reach our residents so that we may rise together and shine as a community.”
