From the Heart: Needa Spells’ Legacy for Future Generations

In 1969, Needa Spells had an idea she believed could change lives. She wrote directly to the President of the United States, urging him to create a national program to teach children the value of saving money. She believed that financial education at a young age could shape a child’s future.

Although she never received a reply, Ms. Spells did not wait for action from Washington. She took action herself.

Beginning in the early 1960s and continuing for more than 40 years, Ms. Spells led the Youth Security Outreach Club, where she taught young people lessons that extended far beyond dollars and cents. Courtesy. Cleanliness. Piety. Service to others. And always, the importance of saving and planning for the future. She believed that when children understood the value of discipline and stewardship, they were better prepared for life.

When it came time to plan her own estate, Ms. Spells applied the same foresight.

Through a gift in her will, she established the “From My Heart Endowment” at Community Foundation Tampa Bay. The endowment continues her lifelong mission by supporting programs in Pinellas County that expand educational and vocational opportunities for underserved youth.

Today, organizations such as the Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation, Ready for Life, R’ Club, and Academy Prep benefit from her generosity. Through these partners, young people gain access to mentorship, education, life skills, and pathways to brighter futures.

“I feel that if I can get somebody on the right track, then I have done something worthwhile,” Ms. Spells once shared.

Her legacy has far exceeded her goal to do something “worthwhile.” The impact she has had on the lives of hundreds of children in Tampa Bay is creating ripple effects that continue to shape their futures, strengthen their families, and uplift our entire community.

Through thoughtful planning and partnership with Community Foundation Tampa Bay, Ms. Spells ensured that her values would continue shaping lives long after her lifetime. Her endowment stands as a powerful reminder that legacy giving is not only about assets—it is about purpose, investing in people, and giving from the heart.
